Overview

‘Developing the Mentor’ is a fast paced action centred Masterclass, designed specifically for the population of Partners who have collectively expressed an interest to act as ‘Mentor’ to one or more individuals from the management population of ‘mentees’. We understand this population of Mentors already possess the technical capability, intellectual flexibility, industry experience and personal commitment to be the best mentor they can be and to that end, we have designed this development opportunity to further progress their skills and competencies.

This Masterclass will help participants develop their confidence in planning and conducting both a one to one mentoring relationship and leading a ‘Team Mentoring Action Learning Set’.

Emphasis will focus on:
• Exploring tried and tested methods for imparting knowledge and skills, whilst creating and sustaining a nurturing learning environment.
• Developing strong facilitation skills, when leading challenging individuals or difficult conversations.
• Confidently communicating effectively, using the wide variety of mediums at our disposal within the mentoring arena.

Being truly ‘mentee centred’, with an authentic commitment to improving our approach when undertaking a mentoring relationship will deliver many benefits, including:

• Developing a heightened sense of self-esteem and value from the mentees perspective.
• Highlighting talent that is fit for the future, therefore enabling more precise succession planning.
• Promoting credibility in terms of the alignment of shared values and common aims.
• Aligning the entire business with actionable and achievable goals that will make a positive difference to the commercial health of our business.
• Setting and committing to new standards of performance that will be consistent and continuously ‘raise the bar’ that determines success.

This Master-class provides the opportunity to learn, embed and apply various tools and techniques that can be used to positively address 3 specific scenarios:

1. Adopting assertive positive role model behaviour in the role of mentor.
2. Understanding the reality of our own and others’ Unconscious Bias’ and the potential consequences of this on building effective mentoring relationships.
3. Managing the challenging conversation, whilst maintaining an authentic relationship based on openness, honesty and high integrity.

Objectives

• Understand the key roles, responsibilities and function of a ‘Highly Effective Mentor’.
• Describe the factors which differentiate a ‘Mentor from a Manager’.
• Develop excellent interpersonal and communication skills that will help to direct supportive conversations.
• Increase self-awareness around one’s own ‘Unconscious Biases’ that may influence the mentoring relationship.
• Give confidence and gain commitment to put the skills into practice.
